Todd Wallach – Chairman and Chief Executive Officer
With more than 20 years of experience in operations, finance and strategy, Mr. Wallach is a successful life sciences entrepreneur who has helped found companies with a combined market capitalization of over $500 million. Prior to MDI, Mr. Wallach was chief financial officer and a member of the founding management team of specialty pharmaceutical company Aton Pharma, Inc., where his team increased the company’s worldwide product sales from $10 million to $40 million in just two years’ time. He was previously vice president of finance and operations and a member of the founding management team of Acuity Pharmaceuticals, Inc., which was acquired by publicly traded OPKO Health. Earlier in his career, Mr. Wallach was a management consultant at Booz Allen Hamilton. Mr. Wallach received an M.S. in technology management from the Wharton School of Business and the School of Engineering and Applied Science at the University of Pennsylvania, an M.S. in biotechnology from the University of Pennsylvania, an M.B.A. from Rider University, and a B.S. in mechanical engineering from Purdue University.
Aryeh L. Gassel, Ph.D. – Founder and President
Dr. Gassel is the founder and president of MDI, and led the development of the novel patent-pending technologies that serve as the foundation of the Detect-Ready molecular diagnostic tests for the rapid detection of infectious diseases. Previously, he was vice president of business development at Integrated DNA Technologies (IDT), which he helped grow from an 18-employee start-up into the largest supplier of custom DNA synthesis in North America, with 370 employees and over $45 million in revenue. He received a Ph.D. from UHS/ The Chicago Medical School and an M.A. from the University of Chicago.
Boris Kalandar – Managing Director of Mentortech Ventures
Mr. Kalandar has over 20 years’ experience in business development, venture capital, M&A;, and management consulting. He co-founded three successful technology companies and completed a number of acquisitions, turnarounds and exits. Mr. Kalandar currently serves as a managing director of Mentortech Ventures. Mr. Kalandar founded SVM Advisors, LLC, a boutique technology merchant bank that has raised over $100 million for portfolio companies and other venture funds since its founding. He is also a co-founder and general partner of SVM Israel II, LP, a hybrid investment fund focused on investments in Israel. Mr. Kalandar was formerly a senior executive at SMG, Inc., where he led a $50 million private equity re-capitalization exit. He serves on the investment advisory committee of the Ben Franklin Partners of Southeastern Pennsylvania and is currently involved with several technology companies as investor, advisor, and/or Board Member. Mr. Kalandar received an M.B.A. from the Wharton School of Business at the University of Pennsylvania and an M.S.E.E. degree from St. Petersburg College in Russia.
Peter Linder – Chairman of the Executive Committee of Mid-Atlantic Angel Group (MAG)
Mr. Linder is chairman of the Mid-Atlantic Angel Group Fund, a member-managed angel fund. He also serves as chairman of the Board of Directors of the Angel Capital Education Foundation and is a member of the valuation committee of Edison Venture Fund V. Mr. Linder is a director of Ben Franklin Technology Partners of Southeastern Pennsylvania and the Penn State Research Foundation. Previously, he was chairman of LORE, one of the oldest angel investment groups in the country. Mr. Linder has invested his own capital in numerous start-up companies, has been a limited partner in 15 private equity funds and has been a director of several start-up companies. He recently retired as a member of the faculty and Entrepreneur-in-Residence at Muhlenberg College and also served as a Trustee of The Jackson Laboratory. Previously, Mr. Linder founded and was president of ETHIX, a managed care company operating HMOs and PPOs in 13 states with annual revenues of $50 million. In 1994 the company was acquired by New York Life. Mr. Linder also founded American Interactive, a company specializing in hospital laboratory data processing systems. Mr. Linder received an M.S. in engineering from the University of Pennsylvania and a B.S.E.E. degree from Pennsylvania State University.
David W. Anderson – President and CEO of Gentis, Inc.
Mr. Anderson is currently president and CEO of Gentis, Inc., a clinical stage spinal implant company. He has been a successful serial entrepreneur in the medical device field for 20 years, contributing to the creation and growth of five orthopaedic firms, serving as founder, CEO or chairman of Osteotech, Bionx Implants, Replication Medical, and Orteq Ltd., as well as Gentis. Mr. Anderson also served as CEO of cardiology company Kensey Nash and of Sterilox Technologies. He has raised over $200 million in capital, taken a company through a Nasdaq IPO and has been a part of multiple M&A; transactions. Mr. Anderson began his career with Schering Plough. He serves as a non-executive director for Nasdaq-traded PhotoMedex and Vision Sciences, as well as Orteq, and sits on the Advisory Boards of two early-stage medical technology venture funds. Mr. Anderson received a B.S. in chemical engineering from Cornell University.
Menachem Michel Goldmunz
Mr. Goldmunz is currently a life sciences entrepreneur and real estate developer in Israel. He has more than 25 years’ experience in the field of electro-optical airborne systems, primarily with Israel Aircraft Industries (IAI) and also with the research and development unit of the Israeli Airforce. His work included design team and project coordination, design strategy, manufacturing and quality control supervision, project financial management and project marketing. Mr. Goldmunz has also served as a consultant to several start-up companies in the fields of production and quality control automation. Mr. Goldmunz received his B.Sc. and M.Sc. degrees in optical engineering from the University of Rochester.
Vinay Chowdhry, Ph.D.
Dr. Chowdhry has been a successful innovator and entrepreneur in the life science industry for over 25 years. He founded biotechnology company Qualicon™, a subsidiary of DuPont that invented and markets DNA-based automated microbial analysis systems for the global food industry, serving as its CEO until his retirement. The company’s innovative products provide highly accurate microbial analyses of food and other products susceptible to microbial contamination, resulting in greater safety and quality. Previously, Dr. Chowdhry served in roles of increasing responsibility at DuPont, including general manager at DuPont FQMS Venture and research supervisor at DuPont Central Research & Development. He currently serves as an advisor to early-stage entrepreneurial companies. Dr. Chowdhry received Ph.D. and A.M. degrees from Harvard University, an M.Sc. from the Indian Institute of Technology and a B.Sc. from Bombay University.
